"Inclusive AI, Transformative Education"

A.I. For All

Applied AI for Education Research Center at Tennessee State University

The Applied AI for Education Research Center at Tennessee State University (TSU) is a transformative interdisciplinary research facility dedicated to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize education. The center, housed under the SMART Center (Center for Socially-Minded Artificial Intelligence Research and Technology), aims to address crucial issues such as the digital divide, bias and diversity in AI, while empowering underrepresented groups. It will provide professional development and training to teachers, faculty, staff, students, and community stakeholders, while investigating AI tools for classroom application. Additionally, the center will promote innovations and entrepreneurship, serving as a beta site for technology companies. The ultimate goal is to establish Tennessee State University as a premier research center for AI and offer degrees and continuing education in applied AI, with the first emphasis on a Master's Degree in Teaching and Learning for Applied AI.

Our Objectives

  •  Bridging the digital divide: The center will strive to reduce inequalities in access to AI technologies and digital resources by developing inclusive and affordable solutions that empower underserved communities and bridge the digital divide in education.
  • Addressing bias and promoting diversity in AI: The center will actively investigate and mitigate biases in AI algorithms and systems, ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability. It will also prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in AI research, development, and deployment.
  • Professional development and training: The center will provide comprehensive professional development and training programs to empower educators, administrators, and community stakeholders, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively leverage AI in educational settings.
  • Investigating AI tools for classroom application: The center will conduct research to explore the practical applications of AI in the classroom, developing and evaluating AI tools, platforms, and methodologies that enhance teaching and learning experiences, improve student outcomes, and facilitate innovative pedagogical approaches.
  • Promoting innovations and entrepreneurship: The center will foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship by supporting faculty, students, and technology companies in developing and commercializing AI-based educational products, services, and solutions. It will serve as a beta site for testing and refining these innovations.
  • Establishing Tennessee State University as a premier research center for AI: The center aims to position Tennessee State University as a leading institution for AI research in education, attracting top-tier faculty, students, and industry partnerships. It will contribute to the university's reputation and visibility in the field of applied AI, driving collaborations and advancements.
  • Offering degrees and continuing education in applied AI: The center will develop degree programs and continuing education offerings in applied AI, with an initial focus on a Master's Degree in Teaching and Learning for Applied AI. These programs will equip educators with the knowledge and skills to integrate AI technologies effectively into their teaching practices.
